How to measure thread pitch?

To measure the thread pitch, place the gauge over the threads and count the number of threads per inch. However, if you have a caliper or steel ruler, use the device to measure the distance between two adjacent threads expressed in millimeters.
AR-10s typically have 24 threads per inch, but there are some exceptions to this, as you will see later on.

Exceptions to using 5/8x24 as the standard threading for 7.62mm/.308 firearms

AR-10s chambered in 7.62mm/.308 typically has a thread pitch of 5/8×24—this is the most common thread pitch for AR-10s, but there are some exceptions. For example, some AR-10s are chambered in calibers that use a different thread pitch, such as 1/2×28 for .223 Remington/5.56 NATO or 7/16×28 for .300 AAC Blackout.

Types of Thread Pitch

Common AR 15s have only two thread pitch options. For 1/2×28 is for 5.56 NATO works well. The 300 blackout a 5/8×24 thread pitch works. The standard thread pitch of the AR-10 platform (7.62×51) is 5/8×24.

Common Thread Pitch Sizes

1/2 x 28 thread pitch is referred to as the standard thread pitch. It has a diameter of 1/2 mm and is made up of 28 threads per inch; each thread runs the entire length of the firearm’s muzzle. As you would expect, the 1/2 x 28 thread is a right-hand thread which means you tighten it in a clockwise direction and loosen it in a counterclockwise direction.

How to Identify Thread Pitch and Size

In most cases, the owner’s manual or the product page on the manufacturer’s website offers all the thread specs you need. Some muzzle devices even have the thread information etched or embossed into the mount itself.
But how can you know this information for a new piston or mount for an older rifle or an imported pistol?
Taking your firearm to a trained gunsmith is always a good idea, but most of us prefer to handle the upkeep and modification work ourselves. The good news is that you can learn a lot about how your barrels thread on your own using some simple procedures—no need to consult a specialist.
If there are no markings on the handgun, you can determine the threading by looking at the numbers on the firearm. The first number informs you of the gun’s outside diameter, while the second number tells you how many threads are in an inch.
Alternatively, you can use a screw pitch gauge to measure the thread pitch. To get started, follow these simple instructions:
  • You can use a screw pitch measure to check the thread to each gauge till you find a match
  • It’s imperative that you obtain an exact match due to the existence of identical metric thread shapes
  • Knowing when the gauge is precisely where it should let you know when you have a match
  • The pitch size can be determined by taking a reading at that point

Different Thread Pitch Adapter Sizes Explained

Adapters for changing the thread pitch of a pressure gauge are available. Thread pitch varies widely among manufacturers, necessitating the use of thread adapters.
Why are there so many different calibers available in different sizes? Because the amount of threading residual barrel material (often referred to as “meat”) varies depending on the bore diameter. There are smaller threads for smaller bores.

1/2x28

.22MAG, .22LR, and .17HMR calibers
Rimfire calibers have a consistent thread size of 1/2×28.
The barrel of a lot of .22LR handguns is threaded under the slide. Walther P22, GSG 1911, Sig Mosquito, and Ruger SR all use threading under the slide. To use an adaptive solvent trap on these pistols, you’ll need an adapter to reposition the threads at the front of the slide.
Various CZ guns employ a 1/2×20 thread pitch. A thread adapter will be needed to fit a CZ rifle’s threads because of this thread pitch.
9mm
The pistol caliber carbine (PCC) and handgun use the 1/2×28 thread pitch. The barrel thread on a few guns varies from model to model.
  • The thread pitch used by H&K weapons is M13.5×1 LH
  • The thread pitch used by Glock pistols is M13.5×1 LH
  • This thread pitch is used by Sig Sauer firearms (except P320 versions, which employ New Hampshire-made barrels in 1/2×28) except the P320
  • 1/2×30 thread pitch is used by H&K MP5-N
5.56mm (.223)
AR-15s chambered in 5.56mm (.223) typically employ the 1/2×28 thread pitch. However, there are exceptions:
  • The M15x1 thread pitch is used by H&K guns
  • 9/16×24 thread pitch is used in the Ruger Mini
  • The M13x1 LH thread pitch is used by Steyr Aug

5/8x24

“.30 caliber” cartridges and 7.62mm (.308)
This is the most commonly used type of threading. However, there are a few situations in which 5/8×24 may not be the most appropriate threading for 7.62mm/.308 firearms:

  • The Sako TRG has a thread pitch of M18x1
  • With a thread pitch of 5/8×24, the FN SCAR 17 can be used
  • There are a variety of thread pitches used in AK-47s
  • Eastern European and most American-made guns use the M14x1 LH thread pitch

Can You Tell What Thread Pitches are Attached to an AR-15 Barrel?

Currently, there are two known standard thread pitches for an AR-15 barrel:
1. 1/2×28, for a standard mainstream (M4) AR-15 /5.56 NATO and .223 
2. 5/8×24 for other builds or purchased AR-15s in 300 Blackout caliber.
The AR thread pitch attached to an AR-15 barrel is one of the most commonly asked questions. The thing is, if you’re not sure about the exact thread pitches that match your barrel, you might need to try out a few of them to figure that out. There are many thread pitches that are likely to match perfectly with your AR barrel; some of them include 5.56 – 1/2×28 threads, 50 Beowulf – 49/64×20, .223 – 1/2×28 threads, .308 – 5/8×24 threads, 7.62×51 – 5/8×24, .224 Valkyrie – 1/2×28, 6.5 Creedmoor – 5/8×24, 6.8 SPC – 5/8×24, and .450 bushmaster – 11/16×24. How to Tell What Thread Pitches are Attached to an AR-15 Barrel

Before you can wrap your hands around which of the thread pitches works on an AR-15 barrel, you must understand their production process. Some manufacturers of these thread pitches intentionally make oddball thread pitches for these barrels. They do this because they believe it will end up having many pre-done muzzle brakes (which eventually help it fit). By doing this, users won’t have to spend more money trying to reprogram it. So, you must constantly check the manufacturers of each thread pitch; it has a lot to do with how well each thread pitch matches your barrel. 
If you believe that you’re using 1/2×36 barrels and don’t want to spend money, you can easily test it with the 5.56/.223 firearm that comes with a muzzle brake or flash hider having 1/2×28 threads. When testing the barrel, start by threading it on; it takes around 1.5 turns before finally getting stuck. If it worked out this way, then you must have 1/2×36 threads. But in a situation where it goes beyond that, it must have been 1/2×28 threads.

Some AR-15 Firearms and Their Thread Pitches

1. Bushmaster Modular AR-15 Firearms

The Bushmaster Modular AR-15 firearm is semi-automatic and among the XM-15 series. It is produced by Bushmaster Firearms International and has other variants like the Bushmaster XM15-E2S, Patrolman series, and the Carbon 15 line. With a firing range of 600 yards, it works with a 1/2×28 thread pitch and has proved its relevance in military campaigns like the 2014-17 Iraqi military campaign.

2. Stag Arms Model 2T

Also called the Model 2T, it was built specifically for military purposes and is often seen in use by SWAT teams and soldiers all over the world. Like the Bushmaster Modular AR-15 Rifle, the Model 2T is an AR-15 rifle and uses a 1/2×28 thread pitch.

3. DPMS AR-15 TPR

This is a Tactical Precision Firearm that has the capability to successfully dispense 30 rounds when it’s DPMS 2 Stage trigger is squeezed. This firearm has made a name for itself over the years. Designed and manufactured by the same company that has been known for developing AR-15 firearms for years now, the DPMS AR-15 TPR was specifically designed using the American spec and parts. It has been known for perfectly hitting its targets when a 1/2×28 thread pitch is used.

4. Windham Weaponry CDI

This is a 30 round AR-15, 5.56mm NATO firearm with the characteristics of a Semi-Automatic. The tools you’d need for the sight-in include a firearm rest, spotting scope, staples, screwdriver, and paper targets with a bullseye in the center. Most firearm ranges come with a bore-sighting device called a collimator. If you don’t have one, ask your local vendor. 
When adjusting the sights, zero in the firearm between 1.5 and 3 inches at 100 yards. It’s better to aim for shorter targets like this because it would be challenging to have a clear shooting lane beyond it. Now carefully load a single cartridge and fire the first shot at the bullseye on the target. In the same position, fire two more shots, one at a time. If the shots did not strike the bullseye, you would need to adjust the sights. Then fire another three shots at the target like you’ve done before until the three-shot group is centered on the target.
